appearance: At first glance Soifon is not a very intimidating figure. She is of rather short stature, though is highly comfortable with it. Her body is very wiry and thin, having very little body fat. This makes her have a more boyish looking body than anything, having few curves and quite a bit of lean muscle. She wears her black hair fairly short style, cut rather jaggedly to her chin with shorter more evenly cropped bangs and two long braids wrapped in white cloth which go down to her waist. Her skin is neither very pale or tan, but a medium in between the two. Soifon's eyes are a cold, calculating gray framed by rather delicate features on her face.
Most of the time she can be seen wearing practical and dark hued clothing, an outfit usually consisting of a pair of trousers, sturdy boots, and a slightly baggy shirt. In cooler weather she'll dawn a coat, but if it's at all possible she prefers to wear tank tops or shirts with no cloth on her shoulders or back. In spirit form, she wears the standard captain outfit. This includes a black kimono and hakama, with a long-sleeved white haori as well. Her kimono is rather unique in the terms that it has backless and has no sleeves.
personality: Soifon is an extremely loyal person; once she has decided to stand by someone she will do it until the bitter end. Considering this, in her eyes betrayal is a nearly unforgivable sin. She is a very dedicated and hard worker, persevering through any and all troubles she might face to come out stronger in the end. Morality is very important to her, and also believes very strongly in following orders absolutely. She will not hesitate to off a subordinate who she believes is endangering a mission, or who has disobeyed direct instructions. Though most of the time she is more reserved than most, when angered she is a force to be reckoned with.
Soifon has what could be considered a pessimistic out look on life, always preparing for the worst. Despite of this, she sees things in a very black and white sense, believing strongly in what is right and what should happen in certain situations.
abilities/weaponry: Being a captain of a special forces groups, Soifon is very talented in the realm of fighting. While in her human form she is much less powerful, she is still much quicker and stronger than most normal humans. She also has an unusually high concentration of spirit power, so it is possible for her soul to leave her body and enter a kind of spirit form. This is attained through consumption of a "Soul Candy", which she usually carries around with her. When in her spirit form, her skills are amplified several times over.
Soifon also has expert command over her sword, Suzumebachi. When she releases it, it turns from a normal katana to a sharp 'stinger' worn on her right hand. When hit by Suzumebachi in it's released form, a butterfly mark known as the 'hornets crest' will appear on the spot. If she hits you once more in the same spot, the death of the opponent is guaranteed.
weaknesses: Though powerful in her spirit form, Soifon is much less of a threat in her human state. If she loses her soul candy, the transformation becomes nearly impossible. Also, having a very strong sense of what is right and what should happen, when things go in a different direction it throws her off. She can also be extremely cocky, sometimes underestimating her opponent and then later in the battle putting herself at a great disadvantage.
history: Soifon was first known as Fon Shaolin, born into the alternate dimension of Soul Society. She was born into the Fon family, a house of lesser nobility who had a history of joining the special forces of the Gotei 13. This expectation was put on Shaolin as well, since any member of the family who did not pass the entrance exam into the forces was immediately disowned. This was increased even more when all five of her older brothers died on their first three missions, leaving the rather young girl with quite a burden on her shoulders. Still, she managed to pass the exam, earning her place in the forces and taking on her grandmother's codename; 'Soifon'.
She was quickly assigned to be the bodyguard of the head of the special forces, Yoruichi Shihouin. To Soifon, she was like a god. Beautiful, talented, powerful- everything the girl aspired to be. She was rather surprised when Yoruichi turned out to be quite different than she imagined. Being layed-back, playful, and humble, she made a good teacher and friend for Soifon, taking her on as her apprentice. Soifon was completely and utterly loyal to her captain, for once feeling truly happy as she fought be her side.
Sadly, Soifon's world came crashing down one eventful day. She was completely shocked when she learned of Yoruichi's sudden betrayal of the Gotei 13. Her captain had fled along with the exiled head of the Shinigami Research Institute, Kisuke Urahara, for unknown reasons. This left the girl full of hateful and bitter feelings toward Yoruichi as she gained her title, becoming the new captain of the special forces.
After many years, a commotion involving the execution of a shinigami caused Yoruichi to return to Soul Society to assist the young Ichigo Kurosaki in rescuing her. When the two met again, Soifon took it upon herself to kill Yoruichi for her betrayal. Once their fight had initiated, she attempted to use a technique that was very new and untested, so much so that it didn't even have a name. Yoruichi corrected her, calling the technique 'Flash Release'. The ex-captain had apparently invented it first, and warned Soifon that it was too dangerous for her to use. She persisted anyway, and was quickly defeated by her old mentor. Over come with emotion, her last words in the battle were 'Why didn't you take me with you?', referring to when Yoruichi had left Soul Society.
When the entire affair was over, the Soul Society was in shock over the betrayal of one of their most powerful and beloved captains. Shortly after, several of the shinigami were sent to the human world to investigate and prepare for what was expected to be a war. Soifon was one of them, who decided the easiest way to gather information would to be to join one of the pirating ships. Lying about her gender she joined the the Hajimaru under the assumed name of 'Shan', seeing as it's usually a less than stellar idea to spread your real name around.
